ADOM (known as ADOM to its die-hard fans) is one of the most successful roguelikes ever created, known for its brilliant mix of story, role-playing, exploration and intensely strategic and flexible combat. Its complex dungeon crawl builds on the UNIX megahit Rogue and its direct spiritual descendant NetHack, bringing in many new gameplay elements.

The game takes place in the fictional world of Ancardia, whose mountainous Drakalor Chain has been invaded by forces of Chaos. The player's character arrives in the region in order to save it from the invasion. However, he or she can also join the forces of chaos and help them in their campaign to conquer all of Ancardia.

Ancient Domains of Mystery features a very rich and diverse gameplay, with a large variety of races and classes. Each of the ten or twenty possible combinations of race and class influences the gameplay in a unique way. The player can also choose from a large number of skills and abilities.

ADOM is a very challenging game that requires careful planning and minmaxing of the character build to achieve a high level. There are several mechanics that discourage the player from grinding and taking too much time on unimportant parts of the game, such as hunger (although monsters usually leave edible corpses) and aging, which reduces the player's strength and speed.
